How to Connect an SC/APC Fiber Optic Connector

SC/APC (Angled Physical Contact) connectors are commonly used in FTTH, GPON, and CATV networks due to their low back reflection. Here's a step-by-step guide to ensure a proper and safe connection.

Tools You May Need

Fiber optic cleaning kit (alcohol wipes, lint-free swabs)
Fiber optic inspection microscope (optional but recommended)
Fiber optic cable with SC/APC connector (green boot)

Step-by-Step Connection Guide

1. Inspect & Clean the Connector

Check the ferrule end-face (use a microscope if available) for dirt, scratches, or cracks.

Clean the SC/APC connector:

Use 99% isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free wipe.

Gently wipe the angled ferrule in one direction (do not rub back and forth).

2. Align the SC/APC Connector

The SC/APC connector has a green boot (identifying it as angled polish).

The keyed slot on the SC connector must align with the adapter's guide.

3. Insert the Connector into the Adapter

Hold the SC/APC connector straight (do not twist).

Push gently until you feel a click (the latch engages).

4. Verify the Connection

Tug lightly to ensure it's secure.

If using a light source or OTDR, check for:

Low insertion loss (should be <0.3 dB for APC).

No excessive back reflection (APC should be <-60 dB).

5. Disconnecting the SC/APC

Do NOT pull the cable directly (can damage the ferrule).

Press the latch down and pull the connector straight out.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Forcing the connector (can misalign or break the ferrule).
Touching the ferrule end (oils/dust cause signal loss).
Mixing UPC (blue) and APC (green) connectors (causes high loss).

SC/APC vs. SC/UPC Comparison

Feature SC/APC (Green) SC/UPC (Blue)
Polish Angled (8°) Flat
Reflection Very low (<-60 dB) Moderate (~-50 dB)
Use Case CATV, GPON, FTTH Standard LAN

When to Use SC/APC?

Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH)
GPON networks (prevents signal reflections)
CATV/video transmission (requires clean signal)

Final Tips

Always clean before connecting.
Ensure no bends or kinks in the fiber.
Use APC-only adapters (mixing with UPC causes damage).
